Germany's last atomic "pile," or reactor, was built in a cave laboratory at Haigerloch in southern Germany. The reactor never ahieved criticality
— a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction — because of lack of materials and time. In 1945, after World War II ended in Germany, American soldiers (shown here) dismantled the device and then blew up the cave.
